Apr 12th: Milford Sound Overnight Cruise
Day 9 (Day 5 in New Zealand)
We took a 10 min local bus to the place where we were to meet our coach for the 6½ hr, 175 mile journey to Milford Sound. Our driver, ‘Peanut’, was brilliant. We enjoyed his commentary for the whole time in this twisty, turny, uppy, downy journey. The rain of the previous day has made all the many waterfalls that much better.
His local knowledge on history, geography, geology, flora & fauna was exceptional. As was his recommendation of ‘Miles Better Pies’ when we stopped for lunch at Te Anau. Venison & plum. Yum, yum!
Arriving in Milford was a magical moment. The cruise was pretty special too. After a trip around the inner sound we moored in Hamilton Bay where about a dozen people went out in kayaks to get close to the steep sides of the mountains. Another half a dozen went out in tenders.
When they were all back on board an excellent buffet supper was served. We shared a table with a couple from Leeds.
The only slight disappointment was the totally cloudy sky so no stargazing for us! Tired and happy we squeezed into our tiny en-suite cabin and fell asleep
I took about 100 photos and videos on the day but only have the space for a few here.
