Singapore Summary
Several things struck us about Singapore even though we were only there for just over 48 hours.
It is very clean and everything is in good order. Nothing made you think, “That needs a bit of TLC or a lick of paint” and everything worked as designed.
It is a very tech-savvy city.
The people were very friendly.
They have no smoking areas in some open spaces.
We saw no beggars on the streets, no homelessness, no vandalism or graffiti. The people seem to respect the country and its laws.*
I knew chewing gum was banned in Singapore with big fines for disposing of it on the street but I hadn’t realised it was unavailable to buy there.
Our taxi driver said if you park illegally your car is quickly towed away and if the heavy fine is not paid then prison follows!
Their underground system (MRT) knocks absolute spots off London’s. Sure, it is very new but it is efficient, clean, quiet and safe. Obviously it’s no smoking but it is also ‘no eating’, ‘no drinking’ and ‘no durian-ing’ 😂🤣
We would certainly go back
* I am conscious that we only saw the tourist areas and didn’t venture far afield. Likewise, their government may or may not be very strict but, politics aside, their government departments (planning, maintenance, recreation, transport, etc) all seem to function well and be integrated. Also, the consequences of non-conformity are quite severe: heavy fines then imprisonment for not paying them. No messing about!
